The New York State Office of Cannabis Management has granted the first 52 cannabis cultivation licenses for adult use cannabis under the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act of 2021. The licenses are to be distributed to ensure 50% go to disenfranchised NY state residents who have cannabis conviction in their past.
These conditional adult use cultivator licenses have been granted to allow previously-licensed hemp farmers early access to legal cannabis cultivation to ensure product is available for the NY market when distribution licenses are awarded later this year.
The Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act pointed to a division of licensing along the lines of growing, processing, and distribution. These first 52 cultivator licenses allow the farmers to “minimally process and distribute cannabis products, provided that such final products shall be in the form of cannabis flower.”
The application window for cannabis cultivation licenses remains open through June 30th of this year. Applicants are paying a $2000 non-refundable application fee to just try for the chance to get a license.
